Education and current work
Hugh Benham graduated from the University of Southampton with a BA in English and Music. Subsequently, he earned a PhD (A Study and Assessment of the Music of John Taverner). Hugh is currently director of music at St Boniface (Church of England) in Chandler’s Ford, Hampshire. In addition, he is Chairman of the Academic Board of the Guild of Church Musicians.
Compositions
Hugh wrote most of his compositions after 2000. Convivium Records have released many recordings of these. United Music Publishing have published most of his compositions, some of which have yet to be recorded. Likewise, others are available from H.T. FitzSimons and World Library Publications (USA).

Since the 1970s Hugh has been widely known for his academic and educational books and numerous articles. For example, he has produced works on Tudor church music, Baroque music and Ralph Vaughan Williams. He has also covered subjects relating to A-level Music, including harmony and counterpoint. He has edited the complete works of John Taverner for the Early English Church Music series. Finally, he has produced an edition of a little-known Passacaglia by Vaughan Williams for Guild Publications (the imprint of the Guild of Church Musicians).
